The Cisco N2K-C2232PP is a 10 Gigabit Ethernet fabric extender that moves the switching fabric of a Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switch right to the edge of the rack. By functioning as a remote line-card, it lets you treat each server-facing port as if it were on the parent switch, so policies, security settings, and quality of service all stay consistent without extra configuration.

Thirty-two SFP+ downlink ports give every rack or blade server the option to connect at 10 Gigabit Ethernet or run Fibre Channel over Ethernet when storage traffic shares the same cables. Eight SFP+ uplinks return that traffic to the Nexus 5000, providing bandwidth headroom while keeping cabling simple and short inside the rack.

The extender accepts servers that still operate at 100 Megabit or 1 Gigabit speeds, so mixed environments can migrate to 10 Gigabit on their own schedule. Because all forwarding decisions occur on the parent switch, administrators manage one device instead of many, which reduces the chance of configuration drift and speeds up troubleshooting.

This model suits data centers that host virtualized workloads, high-performance computing clusters, or converged storage networks. It is equally at home in enterprise server rooms and cloud pods where space is tight, cable runs must be short, and operational consistency is critical.

Highlights:
  • 32 SFP+ server-facing ports that support 10 Gigabit Ethernet and FCoE
  • 8 SFP+ uplink ports delivering 10 Gigabit Ethernet to a Cisco Nexus 5000 switch
  • Unified access for servers running at 100 Megabit, 1 Gigabit, or 10 Gigabit speeds
  • Acts as a remote I/O extension, forming a single logical system with the parent switch
  • One point of management for policies, security, and quality of service
  • Compatible with both rack and blade server deployments in modern data centers
